ContraGel is the "naturally green" spermicide for use with diaphragms and cervical caps. Contains no synthetic or artificial ingredients and is completely chemical free.
ContraGel comes in a 60ml tube that includes instructions in English and the product contains only natural ingredients such as:
- Water
- Lactic Acid (milk acid)
- Sodium Lactate (natural salt from fermentation)
- Methylcellulose (natural thickener or gel)
- Sorbic acid (natural preservative)
ContraGel has been deemed effective and has been approved as an over the counter spermicide if used in conjunction with a cervical barrier method such as FemCap. ContraGel has obtained the CE mark in Europe as well as approval by Health Canada. ContraGel can be used with any natural latex or silicone as well as rubber diaphragms or cervical caps. ContraGel is also compatible with natural latex rubber or polyurethane condoms and is also water soluble. Expiry dates are imprinted on the bottom of the box as well as on the bottom of the tube itself.
Many women who prefer to use cervical barrier methods such as the 98% effective
FemCap for contraception, usually compliment this method by using a spermicide. Most spermicides like Gynoll have included a popular ingredient called nonoxynol 9 (N-9). Nonoxynal 9 (N-9) is a chemical that disturbs or compromises the function of the head of the sperm, thus rendering it useless. While effective, an ever increasing number of women are allergic to nonoxynal 9 (N-9) due to it's toxic nature. This lead the FDA and Health Canada to issue warnings for Nonoxynal 9 (N-9). Some other products use another chemical compound known as F-5 gel.

Over recent months in North America almost all spermicides containing nonoxynal 9 were systematically discontinued and then quietly reintroduced at much lower doses due to the warnings issued by the FDA and Health Canada. Along with this many different companies producing barrier type products have opted to close their doors or discontinued products such as diaphragms which rely heavily on spermicide for their effectiveness. This has significantly reduced choice and left many women in North America with very little or no options when it comes to low cost natural contraceptive alternatives.
