How were the three sizes of the FemCap determined?
The three sizes of the FemCap were established through clinical research. The research determined that neither age, weight or the height of the individual had any bearing on the size of her cervix. So what specifically determines the size or any future change of size in the cervix? There are two primary factors that require consideration when selecting the size. The first factor is pregnancy. Becoming pregnant for even just two weeks can cause an increase in the size of the cervix. The second factor was the actual act related to the term of the pregnancy and the actual act of giving birth. It was determined that a full term pregnancy resulting in a full vaginal birth increased the size of the cervix the most, where as if someone gave birth by c-section this resulted in less of an increase in size. Thus the following guidelines were established to help individuals select the correct anatomical size of their FemCap, with no fitting required.
The FemCap comes in three sizes: 22mm, 26mm, 30mm. The inside diameter of the rim determines the actual measured size.
(22mm) The smallest rim diameter is intended for women who have never been pregnant.
(26mm) The medium cap is intended for women who have been pregnant for 2 or more weeks but gave birth through C-section.
(30mm) The largest size is for women who have had a full vaginal delivery of a full-term baby.
