Is It Heart Disease or Cardiovascular Disease?
What most of us refer to as heart disease is more often caused by cardiovascular disease. Most heart attacks have more to do with the poor health of our arteries then our heart. This is especially true for women over age 40. While men are also impacted by this disease due to increasing estrogen as they age, women are frequently at higher risk for much longer periods of time because of the influence and increased use of synthetic hormones in their earlier years. In fact many women unwittingly increase their risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke when they start using the pill or other hormonal birth control. Unfortunately most doctors do not believe in natural solutions thus a natural approach to birth control or irregular cycles is almost never considered. Once menopause arrives it lowers the natural bio-identical hormone levels that protect us, thus bringing to the fore symptoms and conditions that were once hidden. Frequently this is has a negative influence on the elasticity of the cardiovascular system and this can eventually progress to arteriosclerosis, clotting and vaso-spasms.
New technology is now giving both women and men the ability to detect these subtle changes before it causes damage and new science based supplements are allowing them to correct the problem, naturally!
The DPA monitor can easily find out what condition your arteries are in and because there are simple effective natural solutions that will allow you to do something positive about it, that do not involve drugs, surgery or a surprise trip to the hospital, the question becomes.
What's keeping you from getting tested? Do it for yourself, do it for your family, do it for your children. Book your test today!
QUESTIONS ABOUT DPA TESTING
What is a DPA? DPA or Digital Arterial Pulsewave Analyzer is an FDA approved medical device that checks the health and condition of your arteries. The device analyzes patterns in the small arteries located in the left index finger. Why the finger? Because these are the first to show signs of deterioration. For detailed information about the DPA machine please scroll down the page.
Who conducts the test? A trained and certified DPA technician. Certificates of authorization are on display in our office.
What is involved in a DPA appointment? Basically you visit our clinic. When you arrive there is a form to complete. We will then seat you in a comfortable chair. A trained DPA technician will clip a fingertip light sensor to your left index finger. The DPA device will then conduct a scan of your arterial pulse wave while you sit quietly and comfortably. When the scan is complete the DPA will print the results. The technician will then either a) provide you with a written explanation of the results, or b) will conduct a 20 to 40 minute informative review of your personal results, which includes a presentation on how you can improve and maintain your arterial health.
How should I prepare for my DPA test? First of all we ask that you arrive about 10 minutes early so that you are feeling relaxed before the test. Our goal is to optimize all the factors involved in your test so that you receive the best results possible.
In order to obtain an optimal test result please:
1) Arrive well hydrated
2) Avoid caffeine 2 hours before your appointment
3) Avoid nicotine before arriving
4) Do not exercise heavily prior to your appointment
5) Preferably arrive without nail polish or acrylic nails
6) Do not consume a heavy meal before your appointment
How long does a DPA appointment take? The average appointment will vary based on the consultation time requested. A $15 appointment which includes a copy of the test results along with a written explanation takes about 15 minutes. The $35 test which includes a 15 min consultation will take about 20-30 minutes total. The $48 test which includes a 30 min consultation will take approximately 30 to 40 minutes total from the time you walk in the door.
Who should be tested? It is beneficial for all adults to be tested on a semi-annual or annual basis to check for very early signs of plaque build up. Why? Because
over 300,000 people die every year without any prior warning signs. Thus it really should be viewed in a similar manner as visiting the dentist. The goal is to catch plaque build up early enough so that it can be easily detected and reversed through specialized proven natural supplementation. For those participating in our prevention program, testing is available quarterly for only $10 per test. This additional testing helps to verify that what you are doing is working and it also helps to verify compliance with the program.
If you have ANY of the following early warning signs get tested immediately;
1) Fingers and/or toes often go cold
2) Numbness or heaviness in the arms or legs
3) Arms or Legs often go to sleep
4) Tingling sensations in lips or fingers
5) A sharp diagonal crease in the earlobe
6) Going for even a short walk causes cramping or pains in the legs
7) Short term memory not as good as it used to be
8) Ankles swell in the late afternoon or evening
9) Nagging persistent cough you just can not shake
10) Breathless even when lying down or with slight exertion
11) Getting up more then twice at night to urinate
12) A whitish ring in the eye under the outer part of the cornea
13) High blood pressure
14) Chest and or arm pain after physical exertion or from emotional stress
Women over the age of 20 have a special increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease due to hormonal changes that occur at this time of life. More women actually die from cardiovascular disease then any other disease by far! Women who have used or are currently using hormonal contraceptives should test regularly. Synthetic hormones are known to cause arterial damage, and behave as a toxin to the body which adds to the risk of clotting as well as vaso-spasm and other related health conditions.
Why should I invest in a DPA screening? One purpose of this screening is to prevent disease before symptoms occur. Unfortunately in Canada, government funded access is only available to individuals who have already been diagnosed with a cardiovascular disease, which most frequently is diagnosed because of a past cardiovascular episode. Next comes the issue of wait time and access to equipment. With the DPA you have immediate access to proven clinical results with out having to first experience a traumatic clinical event.
What does it mean if I test "normal"? It is a very wise choice to get tested early before you ever experience any type of cardiovascular problem. A normal test result is just as significant as an abnormal result. A normal result does not mean that a test was unnecessary. When a result is normal, it not only helps rule out disease, but is also establishes a baseline for what is or was "normal" for you. A person's own result, is the absolute best baseline for monitoring any change that may take place in the future as we age. And while most of us have a basic knowledge about the symptoms associated with a heart attack,
please realize that the average person knows very little about vascular disease outside the heart and the potential it provides for very early reversal of what would or could lead to a heart attack.
Why is early DPA detection so vital? In most cases early DPA detection of vascular disease can be treated very effectively at home with natural supplementation being a very viable option at the early stage.
The DPA test is a very simple screening test that is non-invasive and absolutely painless and it may detect potential problems at their very earliest stages. The tests do not produce any risk or discomfort , and can be done in a matter of minutes.
What happens if the screening test detects abnormalities? First , you will be advised that your results require more immediate attention. Second, we will recommend a more detailed consultation to explain what you can do to improve and reverse your score. This is not a cause for worry especially if your willing to take action immediately. It's much like taking care of a cut, cleaning it so it does not get infected. Similarly we want to help you with the nutritional aspects of your diet that may help stop the impact and reverse the aging process. There are very safe, easy natural solutions. The answer to reversing heart disease in a natural effective manner lies in your diet and to a degree your lifestyle (exercise) . Through on going DPA testing as well as education through consultation, we can help you to understand the true cause behind cardiovascular disease and help you to see what you need to do, to stop it.
There are several specialized products in particular that can help. Some are based on Nobel prize winning research and technology that is proven to reverse arterial aging. Others supplements will help you to detoxify in a simple manner that does not change your routine. It will also help with improving the absorption of what you ingest. This includes any medication you may be on. Reversal is often possible in just a short few months if you maintain the daily recommended nutritional program over the first 3 to 6 months. Our staff will be happy to introduce and discuss these products with you after your initial DPA screening.
Will you work with my family doctor? Yes.
You now have a choice! You now know that you can easily find out what condition your arteries are in and that there are simple effective solutions that will allow you to do something positive about it. You also know that it does not involve drugs, surgery or a surprise trip to the hospital. The solution is completely natural and so safe that even a child could consume it. Best of all it goes to work fast. DETAILED INFORMATION ABOUT THE DPA MACHINE
The DPA provides information on arterial wall stiffness and determines the biological age of arteries in as little as 1 - 5 minutes.
This FDA & Health Canada approved, user-friendly, non-invasive device uses a finger probe to observe the changes in pressure, blood flow, velocity and profile throughout the whole pulse wave.
· Non-Invasive
· No Blood
· No Pain
· Takes a snapshot of your arterial elasticity
What the DPA Tests:
· Pulse Rate
· Left Ventricle Ejection Time (Etc)
· Pulse Height (PH), Pulse amplitude Hydration levels
· Ejection Elastic Index (EEI), Left Ventricle ejection & elasticity of large arteries
· Dicrotic Dilation Index (DDI), indicator of small artery compliance
· Dicrotic Elastic Index (DEI), peripheral vessel elasticity (arterioles to veins)
· Overall Artery flexibility
· Overall cardiovascular health
The DPA irradiates IR (infrared) to the fingertip and obtains pulse wave information with the light absorbing characteristics of HbO2 of arterial blood. The medical terminology for this measurement method is Plethysmograph (PTG) and Accelerated Plethysmograph (APG).
Dr. Harry Elwardt believes that the use of the DPA can help caregivers reduce cardiovascular disease in their patient populations through early detection and prevention, and ultimately assist to decrease the associated financial burden placed on the health care system.
Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer for both men & women in the United States and Canada with an estimated economic cost of approximately $298 billion in the United States alone.
Aging and disease are associated with an increase in cardiovascular events which alter the physical characteristics of blood vessel walls and impair the pulsatile function of arteries.
Impaired pulsatile function of arteries provides important prognostic and therapeutic information beyond that provided by traditional blood pressure measurements.
What is an arterial pulse wave?
The pulse wave is a physiological phenomenon, observable and measurable in the arterial system during blood circulation. During one heart systole a certain blood volume is expelled. This propagates through the arteries due to the reciprocal transformation between kinetic energy of a segment of the expelled blood volume and the potential energy of a stretched segment of the resilient vascular wall. We can observe the changes in pressure, blood flow, velocity and profile throughout the whole pulse wave. It can be used for classification of the artery elasticity.
Why test for arterial elasticity?
Aging and disease are associated with an increase in cardiovascular events that alter the physical characteristics of blood vessel walls and impair the pulsatile function of the arteries. An accumulating body of evidence indicates that impaired pulsitile function of arteries provides important prognostic and therapeutic information beyond that provided by traditional blood pressure measurements.
The ability to detect and monitor sub-clinical damage, representing the cumulative and integrated influence of risk factors in impairing arterial wall integrity, holds potential to further refine cardiovascular risk stratification and enable early intervention to prevent disease progression.
Accumulating evidence suggests that abnormalities in the pulsatile characteristics of arteries occur early in the disease processes associated with increased cardiovascular risk, and can be favorably modified by therapeutic interventions.
We now know that the health of the endothelium and the blood vessels directly affects overall cardiovascular health. Cardiovascular disease kills 500,000 Americans every year in the form of heart attack and stroke. About 16 million more Americans suffer pain and disabilities caused by cardiovascular disease. Today, over 60,800,000 Americans (a quarter of the U.S. population) have one or more conditions that put them at risk for heart attack and stroke.
Waveforms Produced By The DPA
Plethysmogram (PTG) Waveform - The shape of the pulse wave is determined, in part, by the elasticity of the blood vessels. The DPA can analyze the shape of the curve to get early information about a developing arterial vascular disease. The pulse wave analysis can often detect changes very early, and is non-invasive, very easy to use, and one of the most economical techniques available today. The DPA uses a fingertip probe sensor - light from the LED/Photodiode is transmitted through the tissue at the sensor site. The Photodiode detects the changes in the amount of light absorbed by the hemoglobin which forms the PTG.
Accelerated Plethysmogram (APG) Waveform - The second derivative of PTG is an excellent method to evaluate the biological age of arteries.
DPA Advantages
Early detection of arterial wall elasticity and determination of biological arterial age in less than 3 minutes
Monitors effectiveness of therapeutic intervention
Monitors arterial wall response to lifestyles changes / reduction of cardiovascular risk factors
Non-invasive - uses a LED/Photodiode finger probe sensor.
Device is FDA , Health Canada approved
Color printout data sheet when interfaced with computer/color printer
MORE INFORMATION FOR HEALTH PRACTITIONERS
As a health care professional using the Natural Methods DPA Service provides you with a powerful new tool in the fight against cardiovascular disease. In minutes the service can provide an easy-to-understand report and the precise data required to identify cardiovascular disease risk in your patients.
This non-invasive system is capable of measuring arterial compliance. The DPA's sensitivity to early arterial changes builds highly detailed data for assessment in determining whether patients have potential underlying vascular disease, as well as developing an outline for the physician of the potential effects of patient-specific risk factors.
Advanced Technology Working Together With Your Practice
The DPA device measures a pulse waveform produced by the beating heart. Data captured by the DPA during a patient test is analyzed and reported in just minutes to provide a clear, concise evaluation tool for health care professionals.
Arterial stiffness indices are particularly important in identifying individuals who exhibit the development of vascular disease, and enables the healthcare professional to begin appropriate treatment long before the symptoms or clinical signs appear. The DPA has many applications including:
Hypertension
Borderline Hypertension
Hyperlipidemial
Endothelial Function
Getting started: Simple, quick and painless for physician and patient
To begin the test, the appropriate patient-specific data is collected through a series of questions. As your patient rests comfortably, an arterial finger pulse sensor is placed on the left finger. The instrument's monitor displays the waveform as it is sensed. Once data is collected and analyzed, a DPA report is printed.
The DPA was developed specifically for use in mobile events, clinics and show events thus Natural Methods can work for you by conducting tests on your behalf through referrals or if you prefer we can bring our DPA machine to you and your clinic on a monthly, semi-annual or annual basis.
